Becoming the clinician you always wanted to be

Saturday and Sunday October 5th and 6th, 2013

Five Element Healthcare
811 NW 20th Ave. Suite 206, Portland, 97209
Portland, Oregon

When we started out as students we dreamed of becoming like the practitioners who motivated us to study acupuncture. It may have been a meeting with J.R. Worsley or our first practitioner. Now after years of study and practice are we any closer to that goal? Great clinicians are made not born. It is the result of years of focused clinical experience. While seminars can be inspirational, 95% of learning happens in our treatment rooms. This weekend we will examine how to best recognize and use this valuable time in the treatment room to become decisive focused clinicians.

On Saturday we will cover

  • How to bring focus to your clinical learning in the treatment room
  • What behaviors sharpen your clinical skills of CSOE
  • What bad habits slow down our learning
  • How our personal balance contributes to learning
  • How to dramatically speed up the learning process in your practice.
  • Practice these new skills on patients

Great clinicians in Chinese medical history often came to the forefront during times of medical uncertainly, when patients exhibited illnesses that were new, perplexing and resistant to treatment. We are in a similar time now. To become better clinicians we need to recognize this fact and begin to address the problems that are in the way of helping our patients.

Lyme disease is the plague of our time. The CDC has estimated 33,000 new cases of Lyme disease in 2011 and that Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector borne illness in the United States in 2011. Five element acupuncture is an excellent modality to treat those suffering from Lyme disease and other tick borne illnesses. Many patients claim that five element acupuncture is the one adjunct therapy that has helped them the most in their recovery. We will discuss which treatment strategies from our tradition can be most useful, frequency of treatment, what complications to look out for and blocks that are common in this disease.

On Sunday we will cover:

  • Etiology of Lyme and tick borne disease
  • Biological effects of parasitic infection with Lyme and tick borne disease
  • Energetic and symptomatic presentations of Lyme disease
  • Treatment strategies within the five element tradition
  • Presentation of patients with lyme disease

Mark this date on your calendar and register now to ensure your attendance. Class size is limited to 14 in order to ensure a focused clincial experience and time for questions and discussion.

The presenters for this seminar are Joseph and Tamazine Soprani, M.Ac., L.Ac.

Causative Factor: Dogma and Heresy

October 6th and 7th, 2012
Portland, Oregon

Topics will include:

  • What is the Causative Factor (CF)
  • How and why treatment on the CF establishes and maintains balance for the patient.
  • What treatment strategies best support the CF
  • When is the best time to add a treatment strategy outside of the CFEA tradition and when is it a distraction.
  • How to use treatment strategies outside of the CFEA tradition.
  • Why CFEA practitioners are uniquely positioned to make good use of other treatment strategies.

Dogma is a settled or established opinion, belief, or principle. It is important to any structured system of knowledge. The dogmas around causative factor within Worsley Five Element Acupuncture have served this tradition and thousands of patients over the last 50 to 60 years. At the same time treatments outside of this body of knowledge can also be of help to patients. There has been a false dichotomy that has developed over the years around this tension between five element dogma and heresy. In this seminar we will examine this issue and clarify which treatments and treatment strategies are within the tradition of CFEA and how to best use them. You will be surprised to learn that many treatments that have been considered heresies are actually within the five element tradition.

Also we will also take a look at those strategies which fall outside of CFEA tradition; the so called heresies. Whether it is Master Points, Dr. Tan treatments, Dr. Tung treatments, ashi points, Korean Hand Acupuncture or Hua Tuo Jia JIi points, almost all five element practitioners have used them or others at one time or another. We will take an honest look at these treatments and discuss their prudent use for the five Element practitioner. Many of these methods are extremely effective in the hands of a skilled Five Element Practitioner.
